When You Should Choose a Different Detailer (Not Me)

Honest advice on when ED AutoCare isn't the right choice for your vehicle. Sometimes another detailer is better suited to your needs.

guides By ED AutoCare

This might seem odd for a business to write. Why tell you to go elsewhere?

Because I’d rather you get the right service than a disappointing experience with me. Not every detailer suits every situation. I know my strengths and where others excel.

Here’s when you should probably choose someone else.

If You Need Fleet or Commercial Work

I focus on individual cars. One vehicle at a time, done right. That’s what I offer and what I’m set up for.

If you run a business with 10, 20, or 50 vehicles needing regular cleaning, I’m not the best fit. You need someone set up for volume—either a larger operation with staff or a fleet specialist.

Fleet work needs different economics. It’s efficiency and consistency across many vehicles, not detailed attention to one. That’s not me.

Better options: Look for commercial valeting services or larger mobile operations that explicitly advertise fleet contracts. Some of the bigger national franchises handle this well.

If You Have a Classic or Vintage Vehicle

I work on modern cars. I know current paints, clear coats, materials. Classic cars are different.

Older vehicles often have single-stage paint, different plastics that react to modern chemicals, special materials. Detailing a 1960s E-Type differs from a 2024 BMW.

For a well-maintained classic wanting a careful wash, that’s fine. For paint correction or serious detailing on vintage cars, find a specialist.

Better options: Look for classic car specialists or restorers who offer detailing services. They understand the quirks of older finishes and have experience with period-correct products and techniques.

If You Want the Absolute Cheapest Option

I’m not budget-priced. My prices reflect time spent, products used, results delivered. If you want a £20 wash, that’s not me.

Budget valeting is fine for some situations. Need dirt off before a long drive? A quick hand wash works. Don’t pay for full detailing when basic cleaning is enough.

Better options: Local hand car washes, some mobile operators, or even a well-done DIY wash at home. Just understand what you’re getting—it won’t be the same as professional detailing, but it might be all you need.

If You Need Paint Protection Film (PPF)

Paint protection film installation is a specialist skill. It requires specific equipment, training, and experience. I don’t offer it.

PPF protects against stone chips and scratches with a clear film layer. Great for high-wear areas like bonnets and bumpers. But fitting it properly—especially curved surfaces without bubbles or lifting edges—needs dedicated expertise.

Better options: DP Automotive Group in Middlesbrough offers PPF. Just Car Care in Washington (20 minutes from Teesside) also does it. Look for installers certified by major PPF brands like XPEL or SunTek.

If You Need Dent Removal

Paintless dent removal (PDR) is a different trade from detailing. I clean and polish; I don’t reshape metal.

For dents from car park dings, hail, or minor accidents, you need a PDR specialist. Some detailers do both; I don’t.

Better options: DP Automotive Group specializes in PDR and has manufacturer approvals from premium brands. They’re the obvious local choice for dent work.

If Your Vehicle Isn’t a Car

I focus on cars. Not vans, caravans, motorhomes, or boats.

Larger vehicles need different gear and approach. A motorhome has more surface area than my water supply can cover. Caravans have materials like GRP panels needing different treatment than car paint.

Better options: Mark Hayton Valeting covers vans, caravans, and motorhomes. Clean Machine Detailing advertises horsebox and RV valeting. These services are set up for larger vehicles in ways I’m not.

If You Want Tinting or Wrapping

Window tinting and vinyl wrapping are separate specialties. I don’t do either.

They require specific materials, tools, training. Good tinting or wrapping needs precise cutting, careful application, material experience. Different skillset from detailing.

Better options: MAS in Middlesbrough/Stockton offers tinting, wrapping, and detailing together. If you want multiple services done at once, going somewhere that handles all of them makes sense.

If You Need Guaranteed Certified Coatings

I apply quality ceramic coatings, but I’m not certified for top-tier warranty programs like Gtechniq Crystal Serum or Gyeon infinite warranties.

These programs need specific training, equipment, certification. For official certification with manufacturer warranties, get an accredited installer.

Better options: Just Car Care in Washington is Gyeon Certified. APS Detailing in Newcastle is Gtechniq Accredited. DP Automotive Group is Feynlab certified. For top-tier coating warranties, these are your regional options.

If You Have Extreme Time Constraints

Mobile detailing takes the time it needs. I don’t rush to hit artificial deadlines.

If you need a car detailed in two hours before an event, that’s not me. Proper detailing—especially paint correction—can’t be rushed without compromising quality.

Better options: If speed is the priority, a quick service valet (not a full detail) might be more appropriate. Be realistic about what can be achieved in the time available.

When You Should Choose ED AutoCare

After all that, here’s where I do make sense:

  • Regular cars wanting quality mobile detailing. Your daily driver, your weekend car, your recently purchased vehicle that needs bringing back to standard.

  • Maintenance and deep cleaning. Refreshes, deep cleans, interior detailing—the core services that keep cars looking good.

  • Paint correction on modern vehicles. Enhancement polishing, one-step or two-step correction to remove swirls and scratches.

  • Ceramic coating for protection. Quality coatings applied properly, even if not the ultra-premium warranty programs.

  • Convenience-focused service. I come to you in Middlesbrough, Redcar, Stockton, and across Teesside. No driving to a studio, no waiting rooms.

  • Personal service. You deal with me directly, not a call centre or different staff each time.

If that’s what you need, get in touch. If it’s not, I hope this article helps you find someone better suited to your situation.

The goal is getting your car looked after properly—whether that’s by me or someone else.
