Deep Clean vs Refresh: Which Car Valet Service Do You Need?

Not sure whether your car needs a deep clean or a refresh? Here's the practical difference between the two services and when to choose which.

guides By ED AutoCare

When booking mobile car detailing for the first time, you’ll see two main options: refresh or deep clean. They sound similar but they’re different services with different results.

Here’s how to know which your car needs.

What’s Included in a Refresh?

A refresh is a thorough maintenance valet. It’s for cars that are reasonably clean and just need a proper once-over to look good.

Exterior:

  • Full exterior wash
  • Wheels cleaned and tyres dressed
  • Glass cleaned inside and out
  • Exterior plastics treated

Interior:

  • Complete vacuum (carpets, seats, boot)
  • Dashboard and plastics wiped down
  • Door cards and centre console cleaned
  • Cup holders and storage areas tidied

It’s efficient, effective, and gets your car looking good without hours of work. It’s the regular maintenance service.

What’s Included in a Deep Clean?

A deep clean goes deeper. It cleans areas a refresh won’t reach, tackles built-up grime, and gets the car to a higher standard.

Exterior:

  • Everything in the refresh, plus:
  • Door shuts and boot shuts cleaned
  • Wheel arches cleaned properly
  • Exterior trim deep cleaned
  • More attention to detail on badges, grilles, and tricky areas

Interior:

  • Everything in the refresh, plus:
  • Carpets and mats properly cleaned (not just vacuumed)
  • Seats cleaned and treated
  • All plastics cleaned with appropriate products, not just wiped
  • Vents, crevices, and awkward areas properly cleaned
  • Boot thoroughly cleaned

A deep clean takes longer and involves more work. The difference in results is obvious.

When to Choose a Refresh

A refresh makes sense if:

  • Your car’s been cleaned recently and you just want to keep it looking good
  • You maintain your car regularly and it’s not heavily soiled
  • You’re on a tighter budget but still want professional results
  • You need a quick turnaround

For example, if you had a deep clean three months ago and the car’s still in decent shape, a refresh will bring it back to standard without the time and cost of another deep clean.

Many people use refreshes as regular maintenance between deeper cleans. It’s a practical way to keep the car looking sharp without spending heavily every time.

When to Choose a Deep Clean

A deep clean makes sense if:

  • Your car hasn’t been properly detailed in months (or longer)
  • There’s visible dirt or staining in carpets, seats, or plastics
  • You’ve got kids, pets, or a job that means the car gets properly used
  • You’re preparing the car for sale or a special occasion
  • You want the car to look genuinely clean, not just surface-level tidy

If you’re honest about your car’s state and it’s not just dusty, you probably need a deep clean.

Typical Scenarios

Scenario 1: Regular Commuter

You drive to work daily, keep the car reasonably tidy, and hoover it yourself occasionally. A refresh every 4-6 weeks keeps it looking good, with a deep clean every six months or seasonally.

Scenario 2: Family Car

Kids, shopping, school runs, sports equipment, snacks, mud. The car takes a beating. A deep clean every 2-3 months is realistic, with a refresh in between if needed.

Scenario 3: Weekend Car

Low mileage, garaged, kept clean. A deep clean once or twice a year is plenty, maybe a refresh before a car meet or special event.

Scenario 4: Just Bought Used

You’ve bought a used car and it’s… lived in. Start with a deep clean to get it to a proper baseline, then maintain with refreshes as needed.

The Honest Test

Not sure? Ask yourself:

  • Would I be embarrassed if someone looked inside now? (Deep clean)
  • Can I see visible dirt, stains, or grime? (Deep clean)
  • Does it just need a wash and hoover? (Refresh)
  • Has it been over six months since a proper clean? (Deep clean)

If you’re unsure, go for the deep clean. You’ll feel the difference.

Cost Difference

Our refresh starts from £99, while a deep clean starts from £130. That’s a meaningful difference, but so is the level of work involved.

If you book a refresh and the car actually needs a deep clean, you’ll be disappointed with the results. If you book a deep clean when a refresh would’ve done the job, you’ve spent more than necessary but the car will still look excellent.

When in doubt, it’s better to go deeper.

What Happens If You’re Not Sure?

A good mobile detailer will ask questions about your car’s condition and recommend the right service. If they can’t tell from photos or your description, they’ll assess it when they arrive and give you an honest answer.

If someone shows up, sees that your car clearly needs more work than you’ve booked, and doesn’t mention it, that’s poor service. A professional will tell you what’s needed and give you the option to upgrade or rebook.
